Is Fashion Happiness?
Hello I'm Giovanni Rizzo from Chicago, Illinois. I've been a involved in the fashion industry for about fifteen years now. I've travelled the world and seen and worked behind the scenes for many different designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, and Roberto Cavalli to name a few. I am a hairdresser. I'm just so surprised at what the american trend has become. We must be in such comfort zone. Does anyone care what they look like anymore in the U.S.? Doesn't anyone still believe in "looking good makes you happy"? I know it to be true because my clients come to me because they need my help to make them look great. I see the smiles on their faces when they leave. I look forward to hearing the stories during their next appointment about who told them how fantastic they looked! It puts a smile on their face and sometimes even cause a chain reaction of great things to happen. I am a firm believer in positive thinking and positive acting. There is some truth in making your self happy. You can start outside and then happiness will soak to the inside. Go ahead get your hair done, buy a shirt that looks great on you, look in the mirror and say "Damn, I'm hot!" Then go out in the world happy and make something good happen.

I agree!! When I get my hair done and get dressed up, I almost always feel better about myself. Looking and feeling good about myself definitely makes me feel happier and in turn have a better outlook on life! My inner happiness doesn't come from looking good (I believe that is a choice in part), but I find that it is easier to be happy when I am feeling great about myself!
I find that the more positive I am about things definitely has a direct affect on my happiness and the way I look at things in life! I can relate that getting my hair done by my stylist almost always makes me feel good...the compliments that always follow add to this experience!

Giovanni....your webcam/salon rock! Very cool. Even though the broadcast is rudimentary, you can't take your eyes off of it. Congrats...you're the 1st business owner to GET IT! To understand the power of this new media. Hope you reap many large rewards.

Thanks Dan for the support!!!! My plan is to get the quality and sound improved as quickly as possible. We had an average of about fifteen to twenty minutes of eyeball time per viewer that we spoke to. As the speed and quality gets better I think this number will grow ridiculously. I have a lot of fun things planned for next week so make sure that you check in every once in awhile.

Well, I'd have to say no. I think happiness comes in all forms and in moderation. I'm not saying that getting your hair that absolutely perfect way you'd like it, or buying a pair of Jimmy Choo's is not an exciting part of life. But you have to look inside yourself and be happy with the person you really are. Everything in moderation, dear. I know that if I was, what, 40 pounds overweight, I wouldn't be too happy. But that's just me. All I'm saying is I wouldn't take a doctor's advice on cancer if he had a severe sunburn, or was smoking a cigarette. It just seems so superficial. I'm in the business, and with all these trying times we're in, it's so important people don't just focus on the outside. You have to be the kind of person that -- if you weren't you; you would like.

Tiff, I also agree with you!! Sometimes we all need a pick me up and it can start with something as simple as making yourself look good which can cause a domino effect. But if your in the business then you know that our industry feeds on vanity. Vanity is what keeps busy. What world do you live in anyway. Superficial is our world. Many people take my advice for their hair because of what I've accomplished and how beautiful I make them. You can tell by your sarcasm that you may be in the industry but obviously you don't pay attention to reality. That's the problem with most hairdressers. Really listen to your clients and you might learn a thing or two. I know I have learned a lot and still learn everyday.

Tiff, I wanted to expand your last commentary... I noticed from your profile that you believe in "nihilism" - philisophically that can be a pretty strong statement, and I'm not sure that I understand what exactly you mean by this... Can you expand on this?
From that perspective, I am curious to hear more about what makes you happy and how that is really defined? Do you think it is possible for somebody to be truly happy on the inside, regardless of what the outside looks like? Is happiness contingent upon other things, or do you think there is more depth to it than that?
